del.icio.us Ruined my Love Life
Aug. 22nd, 2006 | 05:08 pm
OK, well it didn't really, actually ruin my love life.
But a word of advice: if you're going tag something
That is all.
But a word of advice: if you're going tag something
for:a loved one, and this thing you are tagging is a cool-looking online workout management tool that just so happens markets itself primarily as a weight-loss aid (but is just as useful for people who are already of good weight and healthy), you'd best 'splain yourself.
That is all.

Deloxom Does Still Work
Aug. 18th, 2006 | 09:09 am
For those of you that still use Deloxom, the Blosxom del.icio.us plugin and server-side script I wrote some time ago, know that it was updated a few weeks ago to reflect this del.icio.us API change. Older versions of the script do not work. Just download and install the newest version and everything should be fine.

Beginning del.icio.us Mashups
Jul. 15th, 2006 | 10:42 am
Well, I guess word is out about the other thing that's been keeping me insanely busy this summer.
Check it out! (It's also on Wiley here - dorky (but well done, Robin) cover photo included.)
(My real name is Brett O'Connor for those who do not know.)
Yes, that's right, I am writing a del.icio.us book! Expect this weblog to degrade into pure self-promotion and self-aggrandizing rants shortly. No more fun links for you!
Honestly though, I'm actually really excited about many of the projects that are going to appear in Beginning del.icio.us Mashups because they're various things I've always wanted to do with del.icio.us but, up until now, just haven't had the time and/or opportunity to do.
This book will be a part of a series of other mashup books all by new authors; all of whom seem like incredibly cool guys:
Oh yea, and I was able to sucker
revgeorge aka 90% Crud into being my technical editor. So, even though my name will be on the cover, keep in mind him and Sara Shlaer (the development editor) are the ones actually making me look smart. ;)
Update: Oops, forgot about Beginning Yahoo! Maps Mashups by Charles Freedman, which isn't on the site yet.

music: The Sword - "Celestial Crown"
Those of you watching my del.icio.us links have already seen these, but for those of you who don't here are a few more Google Trend graphs. I probably blew half my day yesterday messing around with this thing.
I think a part of me has always dreamed of seeing this data, and now, like a little kid who was slipped something through the playground fence, I want more! SURRENDER YOUR DELICIOUS DATA GOOGLE! You've got an addict on your hands.
Anyway, hipsters stay under the radar, as it should be:

Drug trends are as expected:

I think this says a lot:

Monkeys FTW (but pirates on the move):

Also,
revgeorge sends me a link to some more good ones by Steve Rubel.

The Del.icio.us Lesson:
The one major idea behind the Del.icio.us Lesson is that personal value precedes network value. What this means is that if we are to build networks of value, then each person on the network needs to find value for themselves before they can contribute value to the network. In the case of Del.icio.us, people find value saving their personal bookmarks first and foremost. All other usage is secondary.Cheers to that!
As people use Del.icio.us more, and in order to gain more personal value, they use tags to be able to find their bookmarks later. Tagging isn’t even the primary function of Del.icio.us. Most of the tagging done on Del.icio.us is done secondarily, and for personal use.
The social value of tags on Del.icio.us is only a happy side-effect. Even though most of the ink spilled about Del.icio.us is about the social value, it’s really not the reason why people use it.

My Neglected Del.icio.us Inbox

Whoa!

People (well, mostly
revgeorge) have been putting links into my Del.icio.us inbox and I haven't even noticed. :(
Really, the inbox is such a great idea, but after it came out no one ever used it so I just didn't think it caught on. I guess I thought wrong.
(It might be cool if the Del.icio.us homepage had some kind of "you've got inbox links" indicator to better show when someone has put a link into your inbox...)
Anyway, no longer shall my inbox go ignored. Thanks everyone!
